16.01.14 – meeting with Chris Laoutaris

On the 16 January 2014, Fellow of the Shakespeare Institute – Chris Laoutaris – joined the 100 Hours team to discuss ‘Mechanical Motion, Emotion, and Objects of Wonder’. We met in the Rock Room at UCL and Chris took us on a tour of early modern automata, cabinets of curiosity, and the emotional and psychological effects provoked by human-like things. From the machine posing as human we moved on to think about the machine as collaborator in our thinking and feeling and considered N. Katherine Hayles’ provocative thesis on ‘How We Became Posthuman’.
