04.02.14 – meeting with Simon Werrett

On 4 February 2014, the 100 Hours researchers met with Dr Simon Werrett of UCL’s Science & Technology Studies department to talk about recycling and re-use in early modern science. To help us get to grips with our subject, Simon brought with him a nineteenth-century microscope in a handsome wooden box. It was our task to work out why this, quite nicely preserved artefact, did not in fact work…

Responses to the challenge Simon lay down – to think about objects as broken, damaged, de-constructed, recycled, and re-used – are posted on these pages. And Simon Werrett’s fascinating article on this subject can be found here.
